Weagant’s mentor, the Harlem Renaissance artist Jacob Lawrence, advised
him to “accept the challenge about which he felt most passionate”.
Consequently he has spent over 35 years trying to communicate the wonder
he feels about our landscape, by balancing his academic formalist
background with the pure emotional response he feels when surrounded by
the natural world. He travels the Yukon, Alaska, and the western U.S.
painting and conducting workshops in pleine aire painting. For ten years
he lived in a log cabin in the remote Alaska community of Haines He has
had over 45 one man exhibitions and has participated in numerous group
shows including 3 Museum shows benefiting the Nature Conservancy.
