Pointillism Paintings and Drawings by Gene Barkley
Pointillism: A theory and technique developed by the Neoimpressionist based not the principle that juxtaposed dots of pure color are optically mixed into the resulting huge (ie. yellow and blue become green).
Stippling: The method of painting, and engraving, drawing by means of dots or small spots to create an image.
Pointillism had its beginnings in the work of the 19th century neoimpressionist Georges Seurat. It is a lengthy and tedious style that few contemporary artists use. Some of my paintings and drawings take over 100 hrs to complete. The two questions I’m most asked are what is Pointillism and why do I use that style. The first question can be answered by definition. The second is an evocative feeling of meditative release. I enjoy the process the building a panting. I have been a builder my whole life, a carpenter and a mason. I try to keep a balance as to which of my endeavors is my vocation and which is an avocation. Like many artists, I work outside to support my real passion, painting! For me, Pointillism is simply a style. I do not practice it in the traditional sense, I have found a way to give it my signature.
Painting for me is an intuitive process and I hope to create images that touch the viewer taking them to a place pleasurable and comfortable. Though self taught for the most part, I have learned much by observation, association, study and perhaps a bit of piracy. I try to surround myself with artist friends who always inspire me.
I work from a studio in my home outside Chelan now. If you’d like to see more of my work or just come for a chat, you can contact me at: 509-682-2134
