SUMMARY:middlelife ii: train songs / rajah bose
DESCRIPTION:This show will be installed at the MAC from January 2nd – February 27th. \nTWO FIRST FRIDAY RECEPTIONS: January 2nd and February 6\, 5:00–7:00pm\nJan 2 — show opening & artist talk\nFeb 6 — show & musical performance \n  \nSpokane artist Rajah Bose excavates the images he’s amassed to create an installation of photos\, videos\, musical compositions\, and sculptures for the MAC Gallery.  The second iteration of his middlelife series\, middlelife ii\, focuses his lens more directly at the opposite sides of the world from where his parents originate — his father the son of a Indian factory worker and his mother the daughter of a Wisconsin farmer. \n\n \n \n\nphoto album: corrupt volume / middlelife / Whitworth\n\n\nmiddlelife ii\nMy memory is made of images — some I’ve made\, some I’ve taken.\n\nThese hundreds of thousands of moments captured on silicon sensors are stored and ready for recall\, if I can locate them. Many of those images haven’t been seen since they were created\, transferred to hard drives and stacked on shelves like the photo albums my mother made of our family growing up\, just more dense.\n\nFor middlelife I searched those albums\, those hard drives\, for every photograph that was saved. Many reminded me of the moments when they were created\, experiences I had otherwise not recalled. I also found that many held no memory for me at all. This was an unsettling experience for a mind that has come to rely on the camera as the memory’s assistant.\n\nFor a photojournalist the image is proof\, it is the truth\, but whose? Two people will not share the same ‘thousand words’ about any given photograph. Is it reasonable to think the image is somewhat subjective\, and bends to the viewer’s expectation? Photographs\, regardless of how they’re made\, are no more true than any story we’ve told ourselves.\n\nDocumentary images create a duality of memory between the photographer and subject. Part of my subjects’ lives are forever intertwined with my own. It’s this memory creation through photography and documentation that encircles all of our lives\, a perpetual borrowing from one another. We are not merely creatures of our own creation; everything we are\, down to our own memories\, is borrowed from another.\n\nThose images remember me and remember for me. I trust them because they tell me who I believe I am. They’re proof I was here\, though they’re far from the truth.\n\n\nperpetual memoria / middlelife / whitworth\nthe sequel\nThis show is the second installment of the middlelife series. The first iteration introduced the theme — the photographics of memory through a retrospective of my photojournalism work. middlelife ii\, similarly compares origins\, but through the lens of the places where my family originates.\n\nMy parents are from opposite sides of the world — the son of a Indian factory worker and the daughter of a Wisconsin farmer. They continue to shape me in my attempts to know them by understanding where they come from. In my travels through the countries where they were born\, I’ve documented the moments around me as I’ve passed through by foot\, or car\, or train\, with little additional planning or direction.\n\nThese otherwise disconnected photographic observations through the countryside and cityscapes of India and America are made common by their pairings with one another. These diptychs sourced from two very different places create a new comprehension at their intersection. Somewhat inter- dimensionally\, this is the place where I’m from.\n\nsound of music\nInspired by travels and stories gathered along the Indian and American rails\, Rajah recorded The First Sounds\, an album of train songs that accompanies this show. The album may be listened to in the gallery on available headphones and will be performed live during the First Friday openings.\n\nThe First Sounds album may be found at Raj Saint Paul and heard wherever you listen to music.\n\nartist bio\n\nRajah has worked as a newspaper photojournalist\, a commercial photographer\, and a filmmaker. He lives in Spokane with his wife Ellen\, a fellow artist. \nFIRST FRIDAY RECEPTIONS: January 2nd and February 6\, 5:00–7:00pm\nJan 2 — show opening & artist talk\nFeb 6 — show & musical performance

SUMMARY:Collaborative Effect: Prints by Natalie Dotzauer and Her Printmaking Students
DESCRIPTION:For October\, the MAC Gallery showcases products from WVC’s printmaking program\, with works by instructor Natalie Dotzauer and a range of students who have studied with her in recent years.  Even as other colleges and universities are paring back their offerings in printmaking\, the WVC Art Department remains committed to teaching these important media processes\, including instruction in Serigraphy\, Intaglio\, and Relief printmaking techniques. \n  \nCollaborative Effect: Prints by Natalie Dotzauer and Her Printmaking Students\n\nThe WVC Art Department is very proud of our commitment to our printmaking classes\, even as colleges elsewhere make the determination that their programs are too expensive or niche.  Our students are fortunate to have the rare opportunity to study a variety of printmaking processes in the MAC\, including relief\, intaglio\, and serigraphy.  These media are fun and historically significant\, and they expand students’ ideas about what is possible with their art.\n\nWVC’s printmaking studio helps students develop skills for producing multiples of the same image through a variety of techniques. This practice of repetition requires an understanding of sometimes complex processes of transferring ink to paper in a consistent way\, using specialized tools\, and taking into consideration differences in colors\, textures\, and backgrounds when creating the art. Constant repetition allows them to learn and develop as artists in a transformative way.\n\nOn display in the gallery are works from a range of processes\, done by practicing artists from a variety of backgrounds\, from novices to advanced printmakers. Working together collaboratively in the studio\, this shared studio experience and support infuses their work with a new level of creativity and energy. \nThe MAC Gallery is open 8am-5pm\, Monday – Friday. Exception: First Friday of each month hours are extended to 7pm.

SUMMARY:Seen: Figure Studies by Student Artists (Reception)
DESCRIPTION:Seen is an exhibition of figure drawings created by WVC students engaging in the timeless practice of drawing from life. These works reflect hours of focused observation\, refinement\, and discovery. Each piece is both a study and a gesture of witness—offering not only an image of the human body\, but a record of the artist’s gaze\, presence\, and interpretation. \nDrawing from live figure models is a lasting foundational practice for artists\, both professionally and academically. It trains the eye to see with precision and the hand to respond with sensitivity. Working from life challenges artists to observe subtle shifts in anatomy\, proportion\, gesture\, and light. Beyond technique\, figure drawing cultivates patience\, presence\, and understanding\, inviting artists to engage with the body not as object\, but as living form. \nIn both historical and contemporary contexts\, figure drawing is an essential discipline for building visual literacy\, strengthening artistic technique\, and nurturing expressive potential. Figure Drawing is a staple in the WVC Art Department\, and a program we are proud to offer. \nThe Reception is September 5th\, but the exhibit will be on display from August 1st–September 26th.
