SUMMARY:Ellen Picken: 13 Senses
DESCRIPTION:FIRST FRIDAY RECEPTION Friday\, December 5th\, 5-7pm \nSpokane artist Ellen Picken engages multiple senses through her paintings and interactive sculptures\, exploring complex themes of existence\, ritual\, and nature. Meaning emerges not only from the symbolic colors and shapes in her paintings but also from the carefully chosen materials she uses to create her handmade paints. Personally meaningful substances collected from significant places—such as willow ash\, sandstone\, eggshell\, copper\, salt\, brick\, pinesap\, beeswax\, rust\, alluvial sand\, deer bone\, and iron oxide—are ground up and used to make her colors\, deepening the experience of the works. \nThe seasons are the Ritual. Our rituals uphold the original. They bring us into rhythm with the First and Ongoing Dance. \nThese are the four trees that guided my life. The Maple\, Ponderosa\, Willow\, and Mulberry of Antilon Creek. They taught and protected my cousins and siblings; made work and provided rest for my parents; gave\, whether anyone was aware of their offerings or not. Their gifts were too obvious for me to ignore. \nThere are two approaches to the paintings: the symbolic or the material. Symbolically they represent different aspects of a whole personality (vulnerability/protectiveness\, intro/extraversion etc.) Materially\, like the living trees\, the paintings are made of the same elements of the Earth but take different forms. The unique forms reveal understandable aspects of the overwhelming whole. In a graspable way\, they show us how to be in accordance with the cycles of life. That is their gift. \nYou have to be able to trust your inner voice to hear theirs. The Questioning Rounds sculpture in the center of the room is a tool for you to use to communicate with the paintings and yourself. Each tree will answer your question according to its(your) nature. Spin the disks. Wherever they stop in front of you\, ask a painting/tree the question with your thinking\, feeling\, or intuitive center in your head\, heart\, or diaphragm. See how the answer changes according to who you ask\, and from where your question originates within your physical/psychical Self. \nThese paintings incorporate or are entirely created with handmade paint. I collect minerals\, bones\, ash\, and rust from meaningful locations; my great-grandmother’s former home\, the forests our community helped to protect\, the river that is our water-source\, our city in disrepair. I transform the objects into pigment by grinding\, drying\, dissolving\, or oxidizing then stir in oil\, local beeswax and pine sap. \nEllen Picken Bio: \n“Picken’s simultaneously organic and geometric abstractions are part of a long tradition of universalist\, spiritual abstraction. Her works invite viewers to investigate ways of knowing and being\, celestial and earthly\, physical\, and intangible.” – Spokane Arts \nEllen Picken (b. 1980) explores complex themes of existence\, ritual\, and nature\, reflecting her deep engagement with the materials and landscapes that shape her practice. Best known for her monumental public artworks\, Picken has created large-scale murals across the United States for prominent organizations like Adobe\, Google\, and NYC Department of Transportation. She has exhibited regionally and internationally at venues including Samsøn (New York\, NY)\, Gage Academy (Seattle\, WA)\, GlogauAIR (Berlin\, GER)\, Lowell Ryan Projects (Los Angeles\, CA)\, and Entropy Gallery (Spokane\, WA). Picken holds a BFA in Printmaking and a BA in Visual Communication Design from Eastern Washington University. She resides in Spokane\, Washington.

SUMMARY:Navigating Untold Stories: A Historical Fiction Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Navigate untold stories in this historical fiction workshop at the Wells House! \nOn Saturday\, Nov. 8\, 2-5 PM\, explore local stories from our shared past at the Historic Wells House\, with local English instructor\, Zach Eddy\, and learn new techniques to help guide you to a place of discovery\, while you navigate the blurry line between fiction and non-fiction. \nDiscover what stories hide in the gaps of the historical record. How did W.T. “Bill” Clark feel when he returned to Wenatchee dirt poor in the spring of 1933\, nearly thirty years after irrigating our Valley? What did the tense conversations sound like\, as the passenger train moved in and out of a smoke-filled Wellington tunnel\, some deciding to hike out in waist-deep snow before the deadly 1910 avalanche fell? What did David Thompson think to himself as he navigated the pre-dammed Columbia\, floating for the first time into what is now present-day Wenatchee? \nStudents will discuss who gets to tell the stories and why they matter today. If you attended this class before\, this will be a whole new adventure. \nThis workshop costs $10 for WVMCC members and students and $20 for non-members. Registration is required. \nZach Eddy received his MFA in Poetry at the University of Idaho. His writing has appeared in Outskirts Literary Journal\, OneArt: The Book of Jobs Anthology\, Northwest Review\, The Confluence Magazine\, and elsewhere. He teaches English Composition and Creative Writing at Wenatchee Valley College\, and he is the Operations Coordinator for the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center. \nDisclaimer: This class is located on the Wenatchee Valley College Campus at 625 Nelson Avenue. Unfortunately\, the Wells House is not currently ADA accessible. We apologize for the inconvenience.

SUMMARY:Film & Lecture Series: Fish War
DESCRIPTION:The 2025-26 Film and Speaker Series presents: Fish War \nThe Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center is honored to host a screening of the award-winning documentary Fish War on Thursday\, Nov. 13\, at 6 PM. \nFilm Description: \nWhen the state of Washington made it illegal for tribes to fish for salmon in their usual and accustomed places\, it was a declaration of war. FISH WAR follows the tribes’ fight to exercise their treaty-reserved fishing rights. A landmark court case in 1974 would affirm the tribes’ treaty rights and establish them as co-managers of the resource\, but the fate of salmon in the Pacific Northwest still hangs in the balance. \nFollowing the screening\, the Indigenous Roots and Reparation Foundation (IRRF) will host a Q&A panel discussing the impacts of this film. \nAdmission is free for both WVMCC and tribal members and $5 for non-members. Registration is recommended. \nFunds from this event support the Museum’s mission-serving programs\, including featured exhibits\, MakerSpace\, robotics clubs\, field trips\, student scholarships\, community cultural events\, film and speaker series\, and collection restorations.  \nFish War was produced by Wenatchee-based documentary film company\, North 40 Productions. The 2025-26 Film & Speaker Series is supported by the City of Wenatchee and the City of East Wenatchee.

SUMMARY:Nick McMahan: Dawn on Haleakalā – Wanaʻao ma Haleakalā
DESCRIPTION:In addition to the First Friday reception for Ellen Picken‘s 13 Senses exhibition\, nature and wildlife sound recordist Nick McMahan brings another immersive sonic experience to the Grove Recital Hall with Dawn on Haleakalā – Wanaʻao ma Haleakalā. The hour-long natural soundscape captures a rare dawn chorus recorded high on the volcanic slopes of Maui\, offering a vivid portrait of a pristine Hawaiian ecosystem.\n\nThe work invites listeners to experience sunrise entirely through sound. As the hour unfolds\, the darkened Grove slowly fills with the calls of endangered and native Hawaiian birds\, creating an intimate\, transportive encounter with a landscape few ever hear so clearly.\n\nThe soundscape will start at 5:00 and repeat again at 6:00\, listeners are free to come and go at any time during the piece.\nNick McMahan is a nature sound recordist and environmental advocate known for his unique ability to capture the rarity of the natural world through the art of sound. A commitment to environmental education and awareness\, he is the Director of Quiet Trails for Quiet Parks International (QPI). With a deep-rooted passion for nature and the environment\, McMahan captures immersive experiences that inspire mindfulness\, connection\, and a renewed commitment to preserving the planet. \nhttps://www.nickcmcmahan.com/\nhttps://ncwarts.org/nick-mcmahan/ \nnick.mangomedia@gmail.com
